Exclusive: Abri van Straten Discusses Life, Music, & Meeting Kristin

Abri van Straten is a talented singer and songwriter who has found success both as a solo artist and as lead singer of the South African band the Lemmings. He also managed to steal the heart of his wife Kristin Bauer (Pamela Sywnford de Beaufort) by using his voice. A little over three years ago, Kristin was introduced to the Lemmings CD Imperceptible Shift in the Light. After listening to it repeatedly and watching the music video “Rain” she decided to track Abri down.  The singer was already in LA for a tour with his band and he ended up staying after a few fateful dates for coffee. Of course, after listening to Abri’s music it’s easy to see why Kristin decided to get in touch with him. He has a beautiful voice on top of his lovely music and lyrics.

In the interview that follows, we here at True Blood Fan Source and Kristin Bauer Online got to know the man behind the music and the beautiful voice a little better. We discussed his music, adjusting to life in California, and the True Blood phenomenon!

Kristin has mentioned how she met you publicly many times. The story has made an excellent case for fate, destiny and the power of the internet. But I’m curious to know your side of the story. What was it like for you meeting Kristin after she had gone through so much to find you?

“I was sitting at a coffee shop in LA and my phone rang. I didn’t know she was an actress, and hadn’t seen True Blood yet, but when I heard her voice I knew I’d marry her.”

Some might argue that you and Kristin had a fairy tale start to your relationship. But moving to LA must have been a big adjustment for you both in terms of distance and culture. What are some of the advantages and disadvantages to living here in California as opposed to South Africa and vice versa?

“It is a big adventure to start a life anew in a new country. It’s bizarre to live ones life recognizing nothing from the landscape to the food packaging in the grocery store. It is freeing and does open one up to new experiences. I miss the wild west aspect of S Africa. It is still not a tamed land and that is palpable. But they have planes now a days and so I now get to be from two great cities in the world; LA and Cape Town.”

Imperceptible Shift in the Light and Sunlight and Shadows represent different points in your life. Imperceptible Shift is lighter and exuberant. Sunlight on the other hand is obviously a bit more personal and gets to the heart of who you are as an artist and as a person. How do you think each album represents you?

“Each album is entirely unique based not the time it was recorded. I am recording as we speak and again this music is a reflection of my thoughts and feelings as they are this year.”

After doing an album with a band and one as a solo artist, do you have a preference as to which one you like doing better or are they about even?

“It’s always nice to share the experience with other musicians. But I am lucky in that I can continue to perform solo anywhere in the world with my guitar and my microphone. But I am sure I will play with a band again.”

What serves as some of your inspirations when you’re writing new material?

“My wife. (She’ll like that). Just thoughts and perceptions about life and the Universe. I tend to like those topics: life and this magical Universe.”

Exclusive: A Chat with Kristin Bauer van Straten

Kristin Bauer van Straten is arguably one of the most beloved cast members on True Blood and her character Pamela Sywnford de Beaufort is one of the most popular characters on the HBO series. People actually get mad when she’s not on screen! That’s not an easy feat to achieve for any actor. But that’s just it, she’s not just any actor. In fact when she isn’t acting, Kristin can be found advocating for various animal and environmental issues, interacting with fans on Facebook or Twitter, working on a novel, doing appearances, and spending time with her husband, Abri van Straten and their four pets. And that’s just one day! When asking someone as busy and giving of their time as Kristin is for an interview, we knew it had to be good!

So in conjunction with our sister site True Blood Fan Source, we decided to do something no True Blood fan site has done before; interview Kristin and Abri separately and together! In part one of our interview, we ask Kristin about everything under the sun from her latest projects to True Blood and more!

True Blood Fan Source and Kristin Bauer Online would like to take this time to thank Kristin and Abri for taking time out of their busy schedules to answer the plethora of questions we posed to them. We truly appreciate it and we are very excited to share their answers with our readers!

You seem have become a jack of all trades given that you are an actor, artist, jewelry designer, writer, and now a music video star. How did shooting the video go for you? Would you consider doing it again? (Maybe in Abri’s next video?)

“I would do it again – on such a fun, worthy project as this one was! Of course I’d love to be in an Abri video. He’s recording his next CD now, maybe he’ll let me audition.”

We’ve seen the lovely paintings you’ve done on your website. When you have the time to paint, what do you like to paint and have you been able to progress anymore towards having your own show?

”I need to be much more disciplined about doing my art. It seems to go by the wayside when I get caught up in shooting True Blood, which has been so much fun, and my causes and then just running a life! So it’s been too long…but it’s on the to-do list.”

Who are some of your favorite artists or are there any that inspire you?

“So many. John Singer Sargent is a favorite . I tend to prefer a very realistic style but Abri has made me appreciate the impressionists more like Monet, and Toulouse-Lautrec.”

You’ve played a variety of roles over the years both in television and film very successfully. Has True Blood allowed you to be more selective in the kinds of roles you’ll take on hiatus?

”It has. You get some space to chose. But really I just like acting so I am likely to not look so much at the entire project as I am the words that I will be saying. If I think I can make those words believable then I’ll do it. Of course, True Blood gives me the best words!”

Do you have any favorite ones you’ve done outside of Pam and Maleficent? And if you could play any role in the world, what would it be?

”I also enjoyed playing a complicated human again in “Story of Luke” - and I also have gotten to do so many varied roles, from Congresswoman, to FBI to porn star…I am really more of a character actor and I love it!”

Speaking of Pam, season 4 saw her being pushed even further both physically and emotionally. While I’m sure the character didn’t appreciate the turn of events, you as an actor were given some challenging moments to play throughout the season. What did you learn about yourself from the experience?

“I always start off by finding anything that I can use from myself in any scene. And my first instinct was that I would crumble if I was losing my Daddy and my body too. But Alan said to me, “No, she’s pissed.” And I just loved that! Pam will go down fighting, true to her nature. She is a survivor and I in turn found that in myself too. So it is a real give and take, the character is stuck with me and vice versa.”

Season 4 left Pam and Eric’s (Alexander Skarsgård) relationship in tatters. Pam made a justified but never the less rash decision to fire a rocket launcher toward Moon Goddess to keep Eric from sacrificing himself and he threatened to kill her for it. We saw her become even more vulnerable in the season finale when she broke down in Eric’s office because of it and the fact that Sookie has become somewhat of a threat to Eric and Pam’s relationship. Is this something that could potentially ruin their relationship do you think? Or will they be able to overcome it?

“That is a very good question that I am curious about too. I can’t wait to find out!”

Back in January, Kristin Bauer van Straten and her husband, musician Abri van Straten attended the 110th annual National Association of Musician Merchants (NAMM) show in Anaheim, CA. Get the Look: Pamela Swynford De Beaufort’s Necklace True Blood S4

The cast of True Blood is very well dressed thanks to the creativity of costume designer Audrey Fisher. Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pamela Swynford De Beaufort) has sung the praises of Fisher many times for the clothes she’s gotten to put on for Pam and for good reason. On screen, the vampire is the resident fashionista of the show sporting everything from latex to leather, sparkles and spikes. If you’ve ever wanted to own a piece of Pam’s wardrobe, here’s your chance!

In You Smell Like Dinner and If You Love Me, Why Am I Dyin’?, the second and third episodes of True Blood Season 4, Pam wore a lovely red one shoulder dress and a beautiful red choker necklace to match. If Kristin Bauer van Straten Had 5 Minutes with the President…

If you had five minutes with President Obama what would you say to him or ask him? This very same scenario was presented to Kristin Bauer van Straten (Pamela Sywnford de Beaufort) by writer Robin Bronk for the website the Washington Scene. When she isn’t acting on shows like True Blood or most recently Once Upon a Time, Bauer van Straten spends her time advocating for animal and environmental causes. So she’s no stranger to the political. Among other things, Kristin was also asked where she would send the President if she had the choice and what book she would recommend to him.

Five minutes alone in the Oval Office with the leader of the free world is nothing to sneeze at. The president meets with many people every day to discuss various issues. If Kristin was given the opportunity, she says she’d ask him about two things close to her heart; animals and the way food is manufactured:

“I can’t imagine how full his plate is — mine is pretty full, and I’m not the leader of the free world — but he also has much more help than I.

I know he is aware of these issues and, of course, many more, but an area I am very concerned about is the safety and treatment of our animals and our food. At the least we have the right to know what we are eating with full labeling. Animals also have a right to not be enslaved and tortured, not to mention the devastating effect farmed animals and engineered food may have on our bodies and the body of Earth. The impact of factory farms makes cars look like air purifiers.”

But the actress told Bronk that she wouldn’t go as far as to give the President advice about his job because that would be like asking him for advice on how to be an actor. She did however express her concern about the roles corporations play in politics and how the money they donate to campaigns and to other political causes affect the planet in the end. The earth, she says, would be just fine without us humans. We however, really need Earth.  As for one question she would ask him, Kristin kept her answer simple but it is none the less thoughtful:

“…When does the ends truly justify the means, and when does it not? Can you do mostly good, while being supported by and in turn helping corporations, whose only measure of “good” is profit, and how do you continue to weigh that out? As I believe we all must ask ourselves, in some measure, in our daily lives, if we are to get to continue to sustainably borrow Earth for our home, and also sleep in good conscience at the end of the day.”

The book Kristin would lend the President relates to the promise he made to label genetically modified foods.  It is entitled the Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan and she describes it as an even handed book with no political agenda that looks at food. Given the fact that the First Lady has an organic garden, she suspects that they might enjoy the read.

If she could send President Obama anywhere, Kristin takes a science fiction approach and states that she’d like to find a time machine and send him back in time to see Thomas Jefferson. But don’t expect her to take on a political career of her own any time soon:

”…I am an artist. Period. Plus, my dad used to say, “You sleep with dogs, you get fleas.” No offense to dogs, as I sleep with mine every night. But I’m hopeful that some good folks have skin thick enough to work there — I just hope they also have good memories: of a time of freedom with character.”
